FANTASTIC LITERATURE CONTEST "Divergence to infinity." Interview and review to Fernando Lafuente. THE SMILE OF THE JACKAL

By: Pilar Alberdi

Reading and book review Divergence to infinity has allowed me to approach the writer Fernando, this book is your fourth book and the fantastic second issue, published in a gender-specific editorial. What mean to you after several years dedicating to the world of the story? A: It is very important. My first book of stories (

Vital Flame) was published in a small publishing house and general. This, however, has seen the light with SWAT
, a respected publisher that focuses on the genre I write and she had always wanted to publish. Appear next to writers who know and admire is a great experience. I can tell you honestly that I loved the cover because it refers to the stories and tell us what they want. R: That was from the beginning the idea. For me, a cover can not be just a pretty picture, no soul, no relation to the work presented. Should generate honest excitement about the content, if not a bit like cheating the reader. When Raul showed me the various possibilities, I had a "crush" almost instantaneous. I noticed in your work a concern for human beings, over time, the fate ...
A: Since I started writing seriously, the interest in these issues you mention has always accompanied me, especially the whimsical and peculiar human nature. Often the fantastic or futuristic in my stories is more a means than an end to address issues that are transcendent to me.

Is there a story within
Divergence to infinity sit on the preference? The reason? A: Of course I like them all, but I admit my fondness for "Freeway" and
"Cronik"
, because I felt inspired because I like to write.

Do you think your potential readers when writing?
A: What I think is that if I do my best in my writing, without conditions or limitations, probably my stories will appeal to those who read me.

Can you name the authors or works that you think have influenced the way of understanding literature, and in particular the fantastic?
A: Since the age of fifteen, I read hardly anything that is not science fiction, fantasy and suspense-terror. In SF, it was vital for me to know Asimov, Silverberg, Simak and Bradbury. In fantasy, especially Louise Cooper and George RR Martin. In suspense and / or terror, Poe and Stephen King. And do not forget the English: Domingo Santos, Angel Torres Quesada, Enrique Lazaro, Juanmi Aguilera ... Outside of these genres, always have a place in my heart for Agatha Christie (my story "Epilogue" makes it a little homage). Tell us about your other two passions: radio and games.
A: I've been in a free radio (self-funded and non-commercial) for fifteen years. To be host of a program (with my inseparable Nacho) dedicated to my favorite music (Heavy metal) is a dream to believe just yet. Metalmania has given me many things, especially friends and some little person that I have a wife.
My love of board games was even before taking an interest in fantasy literature. From childhood, "designing" board boxes filled with magic items and monsters to deal with dice. It was not until much later when I decided to try to take my hobby more seriously, and since a couple of years I've been creating several prototypes. One of them became
Essentia

, fantasy-themed strategy game published by Nestorgames.
Thanks Fernando. Thank you, Pilar. I sincerely appreciate your interest in the book and my projects. You were very kind.

Divergence to infinity of Fernando Lafuente
. Review

Pilar Alberdi.

Divergence to infinity
of Fernando Lafuente
ranked No. 38 in the collection Albemuth, the SWAT Editorial
. Foreword by Susan Vallejo, renowned author of the fantasy genre, and cover Studio SWAT.
The cover shows a swimmer, or if you prefer the symbolic image of a cyborg possible, standing on the face of a clock, whose hands folded not seem to mark time. The inclination of the field, as an exit ramp of Olympic swimming competition, offering the bather-cyborg, a place to jump to what I personally think the emptiness, uncertainty, the future of ... The image of helplessness of the body, environmental devastation, plus the device to the man's back seems to be waiting for someone to string, it is a grim metaphor that neatly sums up all the stories that are part of

divergence over
infinite and fall within the fantasy genre. says the prologue, Susana Vallejo : "Stories are the field that a writer should grow towards becoming a good novelist. And today there are not many opportunities provided to the stories. However, they are entirely necessary because they are the land they grow, experiment, learn and discover what you have inside. The stories are the seeds of ultimate writer. " Words subscribe. And indeed, this book is a story that could be accomplished novel as is the case time warp in which we would like to know how the story continues. perceive, after reading Divergence to infinity, that the stories were written at different periods. And I infer the variation in style, including more or less stylistic devices, but also by different emotional depths reached, and that is evident in the stories that have been placed towards the end of the book.
There is interest in Fernando Lafuente for humanity, and the sense of this journey that is life. Concerned about the depravity, the pettiness, the fakes, and achieved success doing things the characters who claim their role in life. He also wondered about issues such as faith, hope, and at its side opposite superstition. Finally, and as usual in this type of work, which includes the fantastic but with a certain amount of terror, the book presents a total of 13 stories. Redskins is the first report. Written in first person, shows the point of view of the victim. It is the story that has more metaphors.
The second story,
Highway, it does point to an allegorical manner to our world and into our lives.
"road calls us, and our machines can not fail to meet the demand juicy." It is required to play that one can not deny to participate, and which also has to fend off competitors. The world in which the characters live is full of roads. It is, as the author says, a "dense web of tar and colossal." What if you do not like the game? Written in first and third person, we have the vision of the narrator, and character that will answer this important question. Epilogue
In the third story of the whole, there is a character asks for the feelings that have had poor Agatha Christie Hercule Poirot when he decided to kill. Written in first person, and garnished with a little Platonic love story that will give meaning, understand the world of Clifford T. Amos, and also that of Randall Timothy cocky. I have to say I really liked this story, not only for how it is written, but because he has charm.

The fourth story is called
Cronik , is written in third person and shows us the world of several players, among whom stands Mighty. For each of Cronik need four players but only one can win. But what do they gain? That is the question. Mighty accompany other potential winners. And we all suffer when "Under their masks of courage and fearlessness, none of them achieved gain control of the game. " The cards have special symbols, and only one fact can pause the game. Revalidation

, the fifth story, shows us what she thinks a character in itself. On the subject, has a similarity to the issues raised in the Epilogue. Thoughts and feelings that, perhaps, could be ours. "No one is indispensable," says the adage, but when you see your potential replacement, the one who can take away the post ... the case is difficult.

In
Omens, sixth in the series, Natalie and Jaime are spending a few days camping. She can not sleep because of nightmares and Insist on Jaime. But the inference that it follows the dreams of his girlfriend may be wrong ...

Divergence to infinity, the seventh story, masterfully resolved in the last three lines. There are a mathematician, a special land and its people. The need to find a specific formula to solve the problems of living beings on Infinite Earths and Fuzzy Land monopolize the thoughts and life of the mathematician. You have to find the formula. But what has not provided the final result.
The eighth story,
blood red ink, is a story that is current. We have a teacher and his students and between this guy more annoying than others, and to which the teacher, young and efficient, not to surrender. Fight for it ... For the young man who does not meet its mission, which is passed school hours "watching the ceiling", wasting time ... But in this story, a grudge or a tantrum with the teacher can reach unexpected limits. Written in third person, the argument quickly traps us. The story also supports a symbolic reading.
The Chinese
slot is the ninth story. Just as in the song by Joan Manuel Serrat the protagonist falls in love with a mannequin in this story the protagonist, who never would have thought end up being a problem gambler can not escape the passion for a slot machine, to the unbearable day he suspects it's his competitor.

successful writer, is the account number ten. Written in first person, is an allegory about the life of public figures for their success, either through a TV program or for other reasons, end up as writers with the help of "literary assistants' ... After reading, it was impossible not to recall the words of Victor Hugo: "Success is something quite disgusting, her false resemblance to merit deceives men." Jump

time. It is the story of a couple and their son, which destabilizes the knowledge of bad news. We get the story straight to the heart for many reasons, one of them, love. But it also raises the topic of how far it is permissible to lie to believe it's for another. And then there is this this sad reality, which as the character comes a day when you realize that one of "the incontrovertible truths of statistics" is, to your chagrin, that always touch someone. Personally I believe in this beautiful and at the time, terrible story, there's a novel. The structure of this tale, is also very attractive going forward and back in time.
In
alien attack, the twelfth story, we see what has happened to a certain beings following a visit by aliens. Finally, the thirteenth tale,
elevator man, reminds us that our fears of children persist in the adult, and that even the rich can avoid them. The story also reveals the innermost thoughts of the people, who in an effort to hide their weaknesses, they avoid having their worst fears.

brings us to the end of

Divergence to infinity, a work which I read with pleasure, and whose stories remain in the memory. A book of
Fernando Lafuente young English writer, from which I look forward to his next book.
